Franklin Templeton appoints head of UK institutional

US-based asset manager Franklin Templeton has appointed Julian Lyne as head of UK institutional.

Reporting into Andrew Ashton, head of UK, Lyne will be responsible for shaping and executing Franklin Templeton’s UK institutional strategy.

 He is expected to work across the full spectrum of institutional channels including family offices, endowments, local government pension schemes (LGPS), defined benefit (DB) and defined contribution (DC) pensions/master trusts, insurance clients, and consultant relations, partnering closely with the broader distribution, product and marketing teams to drive sales activity and develop innovative solutions, leveraging the breadth and depth of the firm’s investment capabilities across public and private markets.

Ashton commented: “Julian’s appointment to lead our UK Institutional business comes at an important time for the pensions industry and will be central to advancing our strategic growth plans in the UK. As schemes reassess how they deliver long‑term outcomes they are seeking strategic partners who can combine deep global capabilities with the ability to deliver tailored solutions. Julian’s extensive experience, deep knowledge of the UK institutional market and regulatory landscape and long-standing client relationships make him exceptionally well‑placed to help our clients navigate this period of change.”

Lyne joins Franklin Templeton from The Pensions Regulator, where he was the interim executive director of market oversight. In this role, he oversaw the workplace DB and DC pension schemes, including master trusts and super funds, and drove strategic initiatives to enhance pension savers’ outcomes.

Prior to that he spent a decade at Newton Investments (part of BNY Mellon) as chief commercial officer. In his earlier career, he held leadership roles at F&C Investments and HSBC Investments, where he managed global consultant relations and developed key institutional products. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of London.
