The European Securities and Markets Authority (Esma) has elected Dutch regulatory veteran Jos Heuvelman as a member of its management board.
Heuvelman, a member of the Dutch financial body Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM), was elected to the board on December 14 and will serve until June 30, 2023.
The board, overseen by ESMA chair Verena Ross, is responsible for ensuring that the body carries out its mission and performs the tasks assigned to it under its founding regulations.
Heuvelman was appointed on the back of a three-decade career in Dutch finance, having worked at the Dutch Central Bank as central banker and as supervisor of the financial sector for almost 33 years.
In 2018, Heuvelman was made a member of the executive board of the AFM
He studied econometrics in Groningen, economics in Amsterdam and obtained a Master’s degree in financial risk management at the NYU Stern School of Business.
The election came after Esma board member Vojtěch Belling of the Czech National Bank stepped down from his position. He had initially been appointed as Esma’s vice-chair at a meeting in Prague on 15 November 2022.
In October, Esmastated its wish to build effective data handling procedures in 2023 to better facilitate the transition to sustainable financing. It also seeks to continue working on the remaining technical standards under the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation and to better combat greenwashing.
Last month, Esma told EU regulators to improve their standards following Brexit, with several financial firms moving to the Bloc with limited technical and human resources.
