Barings has appointed a former London School of Economics (LSE) academic with a background in social and environmental projects to the newly-created role of chief European strategist.
Agnès Belaisch was a senior visiting fellow at LSE and has also worked at fund managers including Threadneedle Investments.
Based in London, Belaisch will be responsible for giving macroeconomic and geopolitical guidance to the firm’s investment teams and will report to Christopher Smart, chief global strategist and head of the Barings Investment Institute.
At the LSE Belaisch investigated how investing in social and environmental projects could generate market returns.
Other previous roles include head of sovereign fixed income at Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management, head of emerging market strategy at Threadneedle Investments, and ten years spent at the International Monetary Fund.
Smart said: “She will help the institute build out its macroeconomic and geopolitical analysis of Europe, expand its bandwidth as an internal marketplace of investment ideas, and develop analyses of long-term market trends for clients, business partners and outside audiences.”
