An article for professional investors only by Kavitha Ramachandran, Head of Business Development & Client management (Continental Europe), Maitland.

Maitland is a global institutional fund services provider with over $200 billion assets under administration and AuM of $21 billion under third-party management company services. We are a diversified company with a strong emphasis on transformation. The firm was founded in Luxembourg 45 years ago and is a reputable and recognised member of the fund industry.

Maitland provides integrated ManCo and fund administration solutions for fund structures and investment philosophies in multiple fund domiciles which includes Luxembourg, the UK, Guernsey and South Africa. Our fund services offering has grown exponentially in recent years, with an offering that encompasses a combination of front, middle and back-office administration, as well as a ManCo solution.

A prime mover
In Luxembourg, Maitland has led the way over the years in complying with new regulations. Maitland was amongst the first movers to launch a ManCo for Alternative Fund Managers (AIFM) and register a Reserved Alternative Investment Fund (RAIF). This has allowed us to expand our offering within Luxembourg, attract clients to set up funds and thereby contribute to the jurisdiction’s economic growth. Our network of fund services in other EU jurisdictions allows for cross-border solutions – we also have third-party AIFM capabilities in the UK and Guernsey, as well as passporting options available for Ireland.

Transformation and diversity
On the human capital side, we have continued to empower and transform. Our management structure is highly diverse, and our workforce a cultural melting pot where diversity has been seamlessly integrated. Representing more than half of our workforce, women at Maitland deliver a high level of expertise and pave the path forward.

Our women leaders in Luxembourg are authorities in their areas of expertise. Kavitha Ramachandran, Head of Business Development & Client Management – Continental Europe, has long been based in Luxembourg and is well regarded as a fund industry specialist. Jacolene Otto, previously our global Head of Private Equity and Real Estate, has relocated to our Luxembourg office and has been appointed Head of Fund Services (Luxembourg).

Both Jacolene and Kavitha hold board positions in Maitland’s Luxembourg entities. Together, these highly skilled professionals further strengthen Maitland’s offering in Luxembourg.

Through our focused empowerment programs, we have achieved a significant goal in our South African operations where, in an effort to address historical inequality, we have achieved the highest possible black economic empowerment rating to address inequalities.

We have a youth empowerment programme in place, providing internships for 115 young people over the past three years.

A sustainable business
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted more than ever the need to live and work in a sustainable way. Investors expect their fund managers to adhere to and quantify the environmental, social and governance (ESG) impact they make. We believe that Maitland’s infrastructure for servicing alternative assets in Europe, combined with the ManCo function, provides a unique ecosystem. The robustness of our model has allowed us the breathing space to help, lead and guide our clients in ESG matters.

Within Maitland, ESG is a major focus and one that we actively develop to improve our ability to measure our impact and find opportunities for refinement within the “E”, “S” and “G”.

Luxembourg is an exciting place within which to operate. We are proud of our long heritage in the country and look forward to growing apace with the Luxembourg fund services sector.
