Funds Europe Top 200 asset managers

Funds Europe launches its inaugural Top 200 asset managers report, collating not only global assets under management data, but also European AUM from the largest managers active in the European funds industry.

Each of our Top 200 firms must have business in Europe (see Methodology) and from this we rank firms by global and by European assets under management. Rankings are in euros. There are 106 European firms and 71 US firms managing money in Europe on a cross-border basis.

A key reason for this report was to understand where European firms sit in relation to competition from US firms. US firms dominate our inaugural Top 200 fund managers in terms of the amount of global assets they manage, even though they are fewer in number.

Crunching these numbers we find data that likely reflects how US firms benefit from greater economies of scale and far more efficiencies because average AUM per US firm is €886 billion, significantly higher than the average of €249 billion for European firms.

However, if this efficiency metric is correct, then we can say that among European firms, French firms stand out as the most efficient, with an average AUM of €398 billion per firm, followed by Italy (€326 billion).

A key objective of our research was to shed light on the specifically European level of AUM among firms active in European asset management. European asset managers dominate the European Top 50 rankings, controlling 95% of the total AUM.

EU-based firms manage a larger share compared to non-EU European firms, reflecting the EU’s stronger domestic focus, while non-EU firms like those in the UK and Switzerland attract more global business. Non-EU European firms hold 44% of their AUM outside Europe, compared to just 22% for EU firms, highlighting their greater global reach.
