The chief economic advisor of the financial services group Allianz, Mohamed El-Erian, has been elected as president of the governing body at Queens’ College, Cambridge University.
Dr El-Erian read Economics as an undergraduate at the college from 1977 to 1980. Since then he has led a distinguished career including serving as chair of president Barack Obama’s Global Development Council, as well as deputy director at the International Monetary Fund.
Involved with universities and think tanks worldwide, the former Pimco co-chief investment officer has advised governments, as well as industrial and financial companies.
Based in Cambridge, he will take up office in October 2020. He takes over from Lord John Eatwell who has held the position since 1997.
El-Erian has also served on the boards of the International Research on Women, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Of Egyptian-American heritage, he is also a contributing editor for the Financial Times and a columnist for Bloomberg.
