The value of securities transactions settled by Euroclear, the Belgium-based international central securities depository, rose 10% in 2011 to €580 trillion.
Euroclear operates in several European countries and is the largest international body of its kind. It settled 163 million transactions in 2011 and held €22.1 trillion of securities for its clients at the end of the year.
However, Euroclear is smaller than the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), which is the central securities depository in the United States. The DTCC settled $1,660 trillion (€1,260 trillion) worth of transactions in 2010 – more than twice the value settled by Euroclear in 2011.
Fund transaction processing grew across all Euroclear entities that offer such services to reach 15.4 million transactions, up 14% compared with 2010 – a small but growing business area.
