Janus fixed income CIO to depart next year

Gibson Smith, fundamental fixed income chief investment officer (CIO) at Janus, will leave the firm in March 2016 to spend more time with his family.

Smith joined Janus as a fixed income analyst in 2001, and entered his current role in January 2006. During the last ten years, Gibson has developed the fundamental fixed income team, which today holds $35 billion (€32.2 billion) assets under management.

As a result, Janus has promoted a number of members of the existing fundamental fixed income team into leadership roles.

Darrell Watters will become head of US domestic fundamental fixed income, while Chris Diaz becomes head of global fundamental fixed income.

Watters and Diaz, who joined Janus in 1993 and 2001, respectively, have worked on a range of portfolios within the firm including global multi-sector strategies.

Janus’ current equities and asset allocation CIO, Enrique Chang, will become head of investments April 1, 2016, and will oversee the fundamental fixed income and equity investment teams.

Commenting on his exit, Smith says he is “proud” of the business he built for Janus over the past 15 years.

“I am confident that the existing philosophy, process and team approach we have employed will continue to produce excellent results for our clients at Janus.”

Dick Weil, the group’s CIO, thanks Gibson for his “significant contributions” to the firm.

“He is an excellent investor and an exceptional leader,” Weil says.

“He and his team have proven their ability to deliver strong results for clients over various market cycles, as evidenced by their achieving excellent investment results across many of our fundamental fixed income strategies over the past ten years.”
